Meet them
at eye level.
A straight-on photo gives a balanced view of the face. A slight turn can work when both eyes and the main markings are still visible.
Get down to your pet’s eye level. Bring the camera toward their face instead of pointing steeply down.

Visible eyes and familiar facial proportions.
Choose another angle
A full profile hides one eye and the opposite side.
Avoid looking down
A steep angle changes the shape of the face.

Give every ear
a little space.
Keep the whole head and both ears inside the original image. A little room around the face is more useful than a tight crop.
Upload the original rather than a cropped screenshot. Missing ear tips and whiskers cannot be recovered from that photo.

Keep the details.
Zoom in on the eyes, nose and fur markings. Soft daylight helps show their features without deep shadows or heavy filters.
Stand near a window or in open shade. Take another photo if movement has blurred the face.
Clear daylight
Even light and sharp eyes show the details.
Too dark
Deep shadows and backlight hide facial features.
Too blurry
Motion blur loses detail even in a bright image.
